For the Cinnamon Syrup: Combine sugar, dark corn syrup, cinnamon and water in a small saucepan, stirring until well-mixed. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring constantly. Boil for 2 minutes, then remove from heat and stir in evaporated milk; set aside.
For the French Toast: In a medium bowl, whisk together egg, egg whites, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon and baking powder. Place slices of white bread in a shallow bowl and pour egg mixture on top, covering evenly.
Heat oil and butter in a non-stick skillet over medium-high heat until butter is melted and foaming slightly. Cook French toast 2 or 3 slices at a time until brown, 2 or 3 minutes, turning once to brown both sides. Serve warm with Cinnamon Syrup.
