3/4 lb | 340g / 11oz | Dates - cut in half |
1 cup | 237ml | Hot water |
1 teaspoon | 5ml | Soda |
1 cup | 198g / 7oz | Sugar |
1/2 cup | 99g / 3.5oz | Shortening |
1/4 teaspoon | 1.3ml | Salt |
2 | Eggs - beaten | |
1 teaspoon | 5ml | Vanilla |
1 3/4 cups | 109g / 3.8oz | Flour |
1 teaspoon | 5ml | Cocoa |
1/2 cup | 118ml | Pecans - whole |
1 | Chocolate chips |
Over dates, pour hot water with soda. Let cool.
Cream sugar and shortening. Add dates and salt.
Add eggs, vanilla and flour sifted with cocoa. Pour in 9 x 13" pan.
Sprinkle pecans and chocolate chips over dough in pan.
Bake 40 minutes in moderate (350F) oven.
Serve with whipped cream or ice cream, if desired.
