1/2 cup | 31g / 1.1oz | Chopped onion |
1 | Garlic - minced | |
1 tablespoon | 15ml | Brown sugar |
1 teaspoon | 5ml | Seasoned salt |
1 teaspoon | 5ml | Chili powder |
1/2 teaspoon | 2.5ml | Ground cumin |
1/8 teaspoon | 0.6ml | Dried thyme |
1/8 teaspoon | 0.6ml | Savory |
1/8 teaspoon | 0.6ml | Marjoram |
1/8 teaspoon | 0.6ml | Oregano |
1/8 teaspoon | 0.6ml | Parsley flakes |
1 | Navy beans - rinsed and drained | |
1 | Kidney beans - rinsed and drained | |
1 | Lima beans - rinsed and drained | |
5 | Pita breads - halved | |
1/2 cup | 73g / 2.6oz | Shredded cheddar cheese - optional |
In a heavy sauce pan or Dutch oven, brown beef; drain.
Add tomatoes, tomato sauce, onion, garlic, brown sugar and seasonings.
Cover and simmer for 1 hour, stirring occasionally. Stir in beans; heat through.
Spoon about 1/2 cup into each pita half.
Top with cheese if desired. Yield 5 servings.
