Apple Brown Betty Recipe - Cooking Index
Old-time mincemeat was a blend of meat, fruit and suet. Today, most mincemeats contain no meat but are made from dried fruit, cider and spices. They are sold in jars in the baking aisle.

For The Topping | ||
4 | Day-old white bread - chopped into rough bread crumbs | |
1/4 cup | 40g / 1.4oz | Light-brown sugar - (packed) |
2 tablespoons | 30ml | Sugar |
1/4 teaspoon | 1.3ml | Ground cinnamon |
1/4 cup | 36g / 1.3oz | Chopped pecans |
3 tablespoons | 45ml | Melted unsalted butter |
Sweetened Whipped Cream - (see recipe) |
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Butter a 9-inch square baking pan.
Peel and core the apples. Cut apples into 1-inch chunks and place them in a large bowl. Toss the apples with the sugar, kirsch (cherry brandy), salt and mincemeat. Spoon the mixture into the prepared baking pan.
Prepare the topping: Place the bread crumbs, light-brown sugar, sugar, cinnamon and pecans in a bowl. Add the melted butter and mix in thoroughly with your fingertips. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apple mixture.
Bake until the top is browned and crunchy, about 40 to 45 minutes. Serve warm, topped with the Sweetened Whipped Cream.
Per serving (without Sweetened Whipped Cream): 220 calories, 37g carbohydrate, 2g protein, 8g fat, 10mg cholesterol.
