Basic Red Sauce Recipe - Cooking Index
| 1/4 lb | 113g / 4oz | Ground beef - (1/4 to 1/2) | 
| 1/2 lb | 227g / 8oz | Onion - chopped (medium) | 
| 4 | Garlic - minced | |
| 1 | Tomato paste | |
| 1 | Chopped tomatoes - -or- | |
| 1 cup | 62g / 2.2oz | Fresh tomatoes - diced | 
| 1 | Tomato sauce | |
| 1/2 cup | 118ml | Red wine - or white wine | 
| 1/2 cup | 118ml | Water | 
| 1 tablespoon | 15ml | Dried oregano - * see note | 
| 1 tablespoon | 15ml | Dried rosemary - * see note | 
| 1 tablespoon | 15ml | Dried basil - * see note | 
| Coarsely ground pepper - to taste | 
* or 2 Tbsp. of fresh herb, chopped
Brown ground beef with onions and 2 of the garlic cloves and drain. Add remaining ingredients and simmer for at least 1 hour. You can add more spices or fresh garlic as you go to suit your taste.
This is an easy stand-by at my house. I use wine if I have it in the house but it's good without it too.
