Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
Stick the cloves into the oranges then put in a roasting tin. Bake in the oven for 45 minutes.
Put the cinnamon, mace, allspice, and ginger in a saucepan with 1 1/4 cups water. Bring to the boil then boil rapidly until reduced by about a third. Put the roasted oranges, sugar, and lemon rind in a large warmed serving bowl then pour over the water and spices. Pour the port into a saucepan and heat gently. Do not boil. Pour into the bowl and stir well. Sprinkle with a little grated nutmeg and serve hot.
