Authentic Italian Tomato Sauce Recipe - Cooking Index
Reduced-sodium tomatoes, paste and bouillon can be used to lower the amount of sodium.

1 | Onion - finely chopped (small) | |
2 | Garlic cloves - peeled, minced | |
1 lb | 454g / 16oz | Ground sirloin - (to 1 1/2 lbs) |
2 teaspoons | 10ml | Sugar |
Salt - to taste | ||
Freshly-ground black pepper - to taste | ||
2 teaspoons | 10ml | Dried basil |
1 | Bay leaf | |
1 teaspoon | 5ml | Celery salt |
1 | Beef bouillon | |
1 tablespoon | 15ml | Margarine |
1 tablespoon | 15ml | Olive oil |
Brown the onion and garlic in the olive oil and margarine, then add the ground sirloin. Mix well while browning, separating the meat with a fork. Do this until the meat is well-browned, then add tomatoes and tomato paste.
Over low heat, add salt and pepper to taste, basil, sugar, beef bouillon cube, celery salt and bay leaf. Cook over low heat for about one hour. Stir occasionally to avoid sticking. Remove bay leaf before serving.
