Gentlemen's Relish

Gentlemen's Relish is a British anchovy paste. It is largely eaten thinly spread on hot toast.

It is made from a mixture of anchovies, butter, herbs and spices. The exact recipe is a secret.

Gentlemen's Relish is made by Elsenham Quality Foods in England. They also make a smoked salmon relish called Poacher's Relish, which most people agree is a poor relation to Gentlemen's Relish.

Some people add it to stews and other hot dishes but given its relative expense you would be better off adding anchovy fillets and some butter instead.

Gentlemen's Relish has an affinity with cucumber.
