Bean 'n' Burger Pockets

Recipe Ingredients

1 1/4 lbs 567g / 20ozGround beef
1   Tomatoes - diced, undrained
1   Tomato sauce
1/2 cup 31g / 1.1ozChopped onion
1   Garlic - minced
1 tablespoon 15mlBrown sugar
1 teaspoon 5mlSeasoned salt
1 teaspoon 5mlChili powder
1/2 teaspoon 2.5mlGround cumin
1/8 teaspoon 0.6mlDried thyme
1/8 teaspoon 0.6mlSavory
1/8 teaspoon 0.6mlMarjoram
1/8 teaspoon 0.6mlOregano
1/8 teaspoon 0.6mlParsley flakes
1   Navy beans - rinsed and drained
1   Kidney beans - rinsed and drained
1   Lima beans - rinsed and drained
5   Pita breads - halved
1/2 cup 73g / 2.6ozShredded cheddar cheese - optional

Recipe Instructions

In a heavy sauce pan or Dutch oven, brown beef; drain.

Add tomatoes, tomato sauce, onion, garlic, brown sugar and seasonings.

Cover and simmer for 1 hour, stirring occasionally. Stir in beans; heat through.

Spoon about 1/2 cup into each pita half.

Top with cheese if desired. Yield 5 servings.
