Fenugreek is an herb and a spice native to the Far East.
The seed are a yellowy amber colour and are used in curry powders and as a spice. Fenugreek leaves can be eaten as greens either in a salad or used in savoury dishes as an herb. The leaves have a very bitter taste.
Fenugreek seeds have been used since the Bronze Age and desiccated Fenugreek seeds were found in the tomb of Tutankhamen.
Fenugreek is very good for aiding digestion and is used by women to increase milk production after pregnancy. An unwanted side effect of eating Fenugreek however is that it makes one’s sweat smell of maple syrup and chilli powder.
In India fenugreek is often mixed with yoghurt to create a hair conditioner.
